What?

Road trip | Hiking

Where?

Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Duration?

3 days

From Tanunda (Barossa Valley) we drove till Wilpena Pound Resort, situated in Flinders Ranges National Park. The route was really boring because we always drove straight on in the dry countryside. Aside the little towns we drove through there was not much to see. After a 5-hour trip we checked at the information centre for some low budget camping grounds. To save some money we chose for an unpowered site. That was 20 minutes drive from the resort. It wasn’t only an unpowered site but also a rocky there-is-nothing site. No grass, but only rocks. Linda and I spent the night in the car, and Robin slept outside on a rock.  We ended the night with goon (cheap wine) and played some cards.

The morning after we drove back to the resort. All the hiking trails started from there. But before starting the hike we had to write down our names and a reference in a book. That’s in case of getting lost. When someone is reported missing the reference will be used.

We chose for the Mount Ohlssen Bagge Hike (6,9 km), which was a 5-hour return. It was a great short walk with steep and rocky inclines and was known as an excellent reptile habitat. At the top (923m) we had rewarding views of Wilpena Pound. It was a perfect spot for some stunning pictures. We enjoyed the view, had a small nap and went back to the bottom. Only the hiking took us 3 hours. After the hike we had a good meal at the resort as compensation.

Right before heading back to our camping ground I saw Craig, a guy from the UK I met in Sydney. How likely was it to meet someone at the same place at the same time? I couldn’t believe it, it is a small world indeed. We decided to drink a beer before getting back to the camping ground. We spent a last night drinking goon and played more cards. After our last night in the car we went back to Adelaide.
